In 1966, the International Cooperative Alliance adopted six principles as guidelines for cooperatives:
1) Open and voluntary membership
2) Democratic control
3) Limited interest on shares
4) Return of surplus to members
5) Cooperative education
6) Cooperation among cooperatives
In 1995, a seventh principle was added by the Alliance:
7) Concern for community
